Commercially available 3-methoxypyridazine (3.00 g, 27.3 mmol) was dissolved in methanol (60 mL) and cooled to 0° C. Dimethylacetylene dicarboxylate (4.00 mL, 32.8 mmol, 1.2 eq) was added dropwise while the reaction was rapidly stirred. The mixture was maintained at −20° C. for two days. A pale yellow solid formed during this time that was recovered by filtration and washed with cold methanol (2 mL) to furnish an off white solid. MS m/z 323.1 (M+1).
