Procedure
A solution of NaOH (3 g, 75 mmol) in water (75 mL) is added to a suspension of ethyl 1′-oxo-2′,3′-dihydro-1′H-spiro[cyclopropane-1,4′-[1,4]diazepino[1,2-a]indole]-8′-carboxylate (9 g, 30.2 mmol) in ethanol (300 mL). The reaction mixture is heated at 80° C. for 2 h. Acetic acid (48 mL) and water (250 mL) are added and the resulting solid is filtered, rinsed with water and dried to afford the title compound (5.4 g, 66%) as a white solid.
