To a solution of ethyl 1′-oxo-2′,3′-dihydro-1′H-spiro[cyclobutane-1,4′-[1,4]diazepino[1,2-a]indole]-8′-carboxylate (7 g, 22.4 mmol) in ethanol (240 mL) is added a solution of NaOH (2.24 g, 56 mmol) in water (56 mL). The reaction mixture is heated at 80° C. for 2 h. Acetic acid (35.8 mL) and water (314 mL) are added and the resulting solid is filtered, rinsed with water and dried to afford the title compound (4 g, 64%) as a white solid.
