Methanol (50 ml), 1,4-dioxane (200 ml) and 10% palladium-carbon (containing ca. 50% water; 5 g) were added to 5-methyl-1-(6-methyl-5-nitropyridin-2-yl)-1H-pyrazole-4-carboxylic acid ethyl ester (15 g) and the mixture was stirred under hydrogen atmosphere at room temperature for four hours. The reaction solution was filtered through Celite, the filtrate was concentrated in vacuo and the resulting solid was washed with n-hexane to give 1-(5-amino-6-methyl-pyridin-2-yl)-5-methyl-1H-pyrazol-4-carboxylic acid ethyl ester as a pale yellow solid.
