Reaction Steps
Sodium hydride (537 mg) was added to a solution of 5-bromo-1H-indole-3-carboxylic acid ethyl ester (3.00 g) in N,N-dimethylformamide (22 ml) at room temperature, and stirred at the same temperature for 0.5 hour. Methyl iodide (2.1 ml) was added and the mixture was stirred at the same temperature for two hours. After completion of the reaction, water was added and the precipitated solid was collected by filtration. The resulting residue was purified with silica gel column chromatography (n-hexane/ethyl acetate) to give 5-bromo-1-methyl-1H-indole-3-carboxylic acid ethyl ester (3.10 g) as a white solid.
