To a refluxing solution of benzyl 3-(3-nitrobenzyl)-4-oxo-1-phenyl-1,3,8-triazaspiro[4.5]decane-8-carboxylate (0.77 g, 1.53 mmol) and ammonium chloride (0.96 g, 18.0 mmol) in 2:1 mixture of ethanol/water (18 mL), was added iron powder (0.3 g, 5.4 mmol) over a period of 45 minutes. After refluxing for another hour, the reaction mixture was extracted with dichloromethane, washed the organic extracts with water and brine. The organic phase was dried over MgSO4 and concentrated to obtain benzyl 3-(3-aminobenzyl)-4-oxo-1-phenyl-1,3,8-triazaspiro[4.5]decane-8-carboxylate (0.80 g, 95%).
