Procedure

To a solution of ethyl 1-[2-(4-Chlorophenyl)-2-oxoethyl]-1H-pyrrole-2-carboxylate (150 mg, 0.54 mmol) in CH2Cl2 (10 ml) was added trichloroacetyl chloride (120 μL, 1.1 mmol) and aluminium chloride (290 mg, 2.2 mmol). After 16 h the reaction was quenched by the addition of a saturated aqueous solution of NaHCO3 (50 mL) and extracted with CH2Cl2 (3×50 mL). The organic extracts were combined, dried (MgSO4) and concentrated in vacuo to give a residue that was purified using flash chromatography (2× Biotage SP4, 12 g cartridge, 20-100% EtOAc gradient in n-hexanes) to give methyl 1-[2-(4-chlorophenyl)-2-oxoethyl]-4-(trichloroacetyl)-1H-pyrrole-2-carboxylate (97 mg, yield 42%) as a brown solid.
