Procedure

10.0 g 4-Acetyl-1-methylpyridinium iodide were dissolved in 75 ml hydrogen bromide/acetic acid at 0° C. and 8.6 g bromine dissolved in 40 ml hydrogen bromide/acetic acid were added dropwise. The reaction mixture was added to 800 ml diethylether and the precipitate was filtered, washed with diethyl ether and dried in vacuo to give 14.3 g of the desired product.
