Triethylamine (1.27 ml, 9.55 mmol) was added to a solution of (2S,4R)-4-tert-butyldimethylsiloxy-N-tert-butoxycarbonylprolinal (19.1 g, 57.87 mmol) in nitromethane (95 ml) under stirring and cooling with ice. This solution was left to stand at room temperature for 15 hours. The solvent was distilled off under reduced pressure, and the residue was subjected to silica gel column chromatography (Wakogel™ C-300, 350 g, hexane-ethyl acetate 9:1) to obtain oily (2S,4R)-4-tert-butyldimethylsiloxy-N-tert-butoxycarbonyl-2-(1-hydroxy-2nitroethyl)pyrrolidine (14.81 g, yield: 65.5%).
