Potassium carbonate (0.27 g, 1.95 mmol) was added to a solution of 4-(2-(4-butoxyphenyl)ethylamino)-6-ethylpyrimidine-5-carboxylate acid (0.34 g, 0.99 mmol) in ethyl methyl ketone (20 ml), and methyl iodide (0.42 g, 2.96 mmol) was added. After stirring at 65° C. for 3 hours, the mixture was cooled to room temperature. The resulting solid was filtered off and the solvent was evaporated. The reside was purified by column chromatography on silica gel eluting with n-hexane/ethyl acetate (=8/2) to give the desired methyl 4-(2-(4-butoxyphenyl)ethylamino)-6-ethylpyrimidine-5-carboxylate (0.26 g, 73%).
