Procedure

In a nitrogen atmosphere, 1.5 g (4.6 mmol.) of 4-(3,4,5-trimethoxyphenyl)-1-piperazinecarbodithioic acid was suspended inmethanol. After addition of 0.2 g of granular sodium hydroxide, the suspension was stirred at room temperature for one hour. The reaction mixture was chilled in a mixture of ice and sodium chloride. To the reaction mixture was dropwise added a solution of 0.29 ml of methyl iodidein 3.7 ml of methanol. After the addition was complete, the mixture was stirred at room temperature for 1 hour. Precipitated crystals were collected by filtration to give 0.8 g of the desired compound as a gray-brown powder, m.p. 135°-137° C. (decomp.), yield 50.8%.
