To 20 ml of ethanol were added 1.0 g (5.36 mmol) of 2,3-dimethoxybenzyl chloride, 943 mg (5.36 mmol.) of methyl 1-piperazinecarbodithioate and 568mg (5.36 mmol.) of sodium carbonate. The obtained mixture was refluxed under heating for 2 hours. Ethanol was distilled off under reduced pressure. To the residue was added water. The aqueous mixture was extracted with 30 ml of ether. The ether portion was shaken together with 5 ml of 3-N hydrochloric acid. An oil which was insoluble in either portion and the aqueous portion were combined. The combined mixture was extracted with ether, after addition of 20 ml of 1-N aqueous sodium hydroxide solution. The ether extract was washed with water and a saturated aqueous sodium chloride solution, dried over anhydrous sodium sulfate, and placed under reduced pressure to distill off the solvent. Theresidue was recrystallized from ethanol to give 708 mg of the desired compound, m.p. 110°-111° C., yield 40.5%.
