Procedure

In a nitrogen atmosphere, 2.20 g (11.8 mmol.) of 2,5-dimethoxybenzyl chloride, 2.19 g (11.8 mmol.) of methyl 1-piperazinecarbodithioate, 1.25 g(11.8 mmol.) of anhydrous sodium carbonate and 15 ml of ethanol were mixed and refluxed under heating for 18 hours. Insolubles were removed by filtration. The solvent of the filtrate was distilled off under reduced pressure. To the residue were added 15 ml of dichloromethane and 15 ml of water. The organic solvent portion was taken out, washed with 15 ml of 1-Nhydrochloric acid and 18 ml of 1-N aqueous sodium hydroxide solution, and dried over anhydrous sodium sulfate. The solvent was then distilled off under reduced pressure. The residue was purified by column chromatography to give 1.23 g of methyl 4-(2,5-dimethoxybenzyl)-1-piperazinecarbodithioate, yield 31.9%.
