Procedure

A solution of 0.56 g (1.11 mmol) of N-(2-methoxy-2-oxoethyl)-N-[3-(octadecyloxy)phenyl]glycine methyl ester and 4.4 ml (4.4 mmol) of 1N NaOH in 50 ml of methanol was stirred at reflux under an talon atmosphere for 75 minutes. After standing at room temperature for 17 hours the precipitate was removed by filtration. The solid was suspended in 100 ml of 1N HCl and extracted with ethyl acetate. The dried extract was concentrated at reduced pressure and the resultant solid was recrystallized from methanol-water to give 0.31 g (60% yield, mp135°-138°) of N-(carboxymethyl)-N-[3-(octadecyloxy)phenyl]glycine.
