A mixture of 1.8 g N-(2-methoxy-2-oxoethyl)-N-[3-[(1-oxooctadecyl)amino]phenyl]glycine methylester and 2.4 ml of 6N NaOH in 30 ml of dioxane and 30 ml of methanol was heated to dissolve the solid and left at room temperature for 18 hours. The solid which precipitated was filtered, treated with 1N HCl and filtered again. Recrystallization from methanol-THF-water gave 1.35 g (79%yield, mp 133°-140°) of N-(carboxymethyl)-N-[3-[(1-oxooctadecyl)amino]phenyl]glycine.
