A solution of 2'(N-methylthiocarbamyl)spiro[benzofuran-2(3H), 4'(2'H)-isoquinoline] (5.9 g) and iodomethane (4.1 g) in ethanol (45 ml) and methanol (100 ml) is heated under reflux overnight. Removal of the solvents yields a solid (8.1 g). The solid (1.0 g) is twice recrystallized from ethyl acetate/methanol to yield 0.6 g (60%) of product as crystals, mp 181°-182°.
