Procedure

A solution of 2-[(5-dimethylaminomethyl-2-furyl)methylthio]ethylamine (2.41 g; 11.2 mmoles) in 30 ml of dry methanol was added dropwise over a period of 45 minutes to a well stirred cold (ice-water bath) suspension of 3,4-dimethoxy-1,2,5-thiadiazole 1,1-dioxide (2.0 g; 11.2 mmoles) in 250 ml of methanol. After stirring at 0° for 15 minutes, a solution of anhydrous hydrazine (1.8 g; 56.13 mmoles) in 30 ml of dry methanol was added all at once, and stirring was continued for 30 minutes. The reaction mixture was evaporated under reduced pressure and the solid residue was treated with chloroform and filtered to give 3.28 g of the title compound, mp 170° (dec.).
