Procedure
To 30 g of N-isoamyldodecanamine in 100 ml of formic acid was added 30 ml of formalin (40% formaldehyde) and the reaction mixture was refluxed for 8 hrs. Most of the solvent was removed under vacuum and the remaining material was made alkaline with 3 N sodium hydroxide solution and the amine extracted into hexane. The hexane phase was washed with water, and then dried over sodium hydroxide pellets. Removal of the hexane under vacuum gave 28 g of N-isoamyl-N-methyldodecanamine, ND20 1,4507.
