A stirred solution of ethyl 3-oxo-2-(3-methoxy-5-methylphenyl)propionate (1.9 g; 8.1 mmol; from step (v) above) in MeOH (50 mL) was cooled to −15° C. NaBH4 (0.61 g; 16 mmol) was then added in portions. The mixture was stirred for 3 hours at −15 to −5° C. Water was then added, and resultant mixture concentrated. The aqueous phase was extracted with EtOAc, the organic phase was washed with water, dried (Na2SO4) and evaporated to yield 2.0 g (59%) of sub-title compound
