Procedure
12 mmol of N-bromosuccinimide are added to 10 mmol of 5,6-dimethoxy-phthalide dissolved in dichloromethane, and then the reaction mixture, lit by a halogen lamp, is refluxed for 5 hours. The mixture is then returned to room temperature and filtered, and the filtrate is evaporated, toluene is added, the resulting suspension is filtered and the filtrate is evaporated. The resulting residue is filtered over silica to yield the expected product.
