Procedure
A mixture of ethyl 1-[(2′-cyanobiphenyl-4-yl)methyl]-2propoxybenzimidazole-7-carboxylate (0.69 g) and trimethyltin azide (0.7 g) in toluene (15 ml) was heated for 4 days under reflux. The reaction mixture was concentrated to dryness and to the mixture was added methanol (20 ml) and 1N-HCl (10 ml). After stirring at room temperature for 30 minutes, the mixture was adjusted to pH 3-4 with 1N NaOH. After removal of the solvent, the residue was extracted with chloroform-water. The organic layer was washed with water and dried, and the solvent was evaporated to dryness to give a syrup. The syrup was purified by column chromatography on silica gel to give crystals. Recrystallization from ethyl acetate-benzene afforded colorless crystals (0.31 g, 43%), m.p. 157-159° C.
