An evenly distributed mixture of methyl 3-cyano-2-[(2-{[(2S)-2-(3,4-dichlorophenyl)pent-4-enyl]amino}ethyl)thio]-1-naphthoate hydrochloride (Intermediate 5, 150 mg, 0.28 mmol) and pyridine hydrochloride (487 mg, 4.20 mmol) was heated at 180° C. for 5 min, cooled, and partitioned between ethyl acetate and water. The organic layer was washed with 1 N HCl and brine, dried (Na2SO4), and evaporated to dryness to give 135 mg (100% yield) of the title compound which was used without further purification.
