Using the procedure described for 5D, (+-)(2R*,3R*)-2-methyl-2-nitro-1,3-butanediol (6B) gave (+-)(2R*,3R*)-2-amino-2-methyl-1,3-butanediol acetate (97%) mp 117°-121° (C,H,N).
