A mixture of 16.6 parts of methyl N-(1,2,3,4,4a,9a-hexahydro-9H-fluoren-9-yl)glycine, 44 parts of formic acid and 11.9 parts of acetic acid anhydride was stirred overnight at room temperature. The reaction mixture was poured into water and the product was extracted with trichloromethane. The extract was dried, filtered and evaporated, yielding 15.9 parts (86.4%) of methyl N-formyl-N-(1,2,3,4,4a,9a-hexahydro-9H-fluoren-9-yl)glycine as a residue (int. 2).
