2.16 g (10 mmol) of 3,4,5-trimethoxybenzyl chloride are added to a solution of 1.99 g (10 mmol) of 1-benzylideneamino-2-ethylimidazole in 10 ml of acetonitrile and the mixture is heated under reflux for 28 hours. The crystallized-out product is filtered off and washed with ether. There is obtained 1-benzylideneamino-2-ethyl-3-(3,4,5-trimethoxybenzyl)imidazolium chloride of melting point 205°.
