A solution of 1.15 g (3.7 mmol) of 1-amino-2-ethyl-3-[(α-methyl-p-nitrobenzylidene)amino]-imidazolium chloride and 0.55 g (3.7 mmol) of p-dimethylaminobenzaldehyde in 25 ml of glacial acetic acid is stirred for 18 hours. The product is crystallized out by the addition of ether. The product is recrystallized from ethanol/ether. There is obtained 3-[[p-(dimethylamino)-benzylidene]amino]-2-ethyl-1-[(α-methyl-p-nitrobenzylidene)amino]-imidazolium chloride of melting point 233°.
