Procedure

(5,6-Dichloro-2,3,9,9a-tetrahydro-3-oxo-9a-propyl-1H-fluoren-7-yl)acetamide (7.03 g, 20 mMole) is dissolved in pyridine (50 ml) and 1,3-dicyclohexylcarbodiimide (4.35 g, 21.1 mMole) in pyridine (25 ml) is added with stirring at 15°-20° C. over a period of 30 minutes. The mixture is stirred at 20° C. for 3 hours and the precipitated dicyclohexylurea removed by filtration and the filtrate concentrated in vacuo to remove the pyridine. Addition of water gave the nitrile which is extracted with ether, dried over MgSO4 and the solvent evaporated to give the pure nitrile.
