To a solution of 26.0 g. of 3'-carboxy-5'-amino-2',4',6'-triiodoglutaranilic acid (Example 21, part d) in 100 ml. of 10% aqueous sodium hydroxide cooled in an ice bath was added 8 ml. of dimethyl sulfate in acetone. After 3 hours of stirring an additional 15 ml. of 10% sodium hydroxide and 2 ml. of dimethyl sulfate were added and the mixture stirred 3 hours longer. The reaction mixture was acidified, and the product collected and recrystallized from acetic acid to give 3'-carboxy-5'-amino-2',4',6'-triiodo-N-methylglutaranilic acid, pale gray catalyst, m.p. 218°-220° C.
