Procedure
2-Bromomethyl-1,3-dioxolane (15 grams; 0.09 mole) and ethylamine (74 ml; 1.65 mole) were charged into a Parr Shaker. The shaker was sealed and was heated with an infra-red lamp to a pressure of about 50 p.s.i. Heating was stopped and the reaction mixture was shaken for a period of about 1/2 hour. After this time aqueous sodium hydroxide (12 ml; 50% concentration) was added to the reaction mixture with stirring. The organic phase was then separated from the aqueous phase, was dried over anhydrous magnesium sulfate and distilled under reduced pressure to yield the desired product N-ethyl-N-(1,3-dioxolan-2-ylmethyl)amine as an oil.
