The diethylacetal of 2-bromoacetaldehyde (40 grams) and 1-methylhexylamine (50 grams) were charged into a glass reaction vessel equipped with a mechanical stirrer, thermometer and reflux condenser. The reaction mixture was heated at a temperature of about 100° C. for a period of about 3 hours. After this time sodium hydroxide (10 grams) dissolved in water (100 ml) was added and the resulting mixture stirred for about 30 minutes. The reaction mixture was then extracted with ether. The ether extract was separated, dried over magnesium sulfate, filtered and stripped of solvent under reduced pressure to yield the desired product the diethylacetal of 2-(1-methylhexylamino)acetaldehyde having a boiling point of 110° C. at 1 mm of Hg pressure.
