Reaction Steps

A 500 ml flask is charged with 100 ml of methanol, 5.4 g (0.1 mole) of sodium methoxide, and 53 g (0.1 mole) of (CF3)2CF(CF2)6C2H4SH and the mixture stirred for 30 minutes at 5° C. To this is added 4.6 g (0.105 mole) of liquid ethylene oxide keeping the temperature below 5°. After stirring for 1 hour, 100 ml of water is added and the product acidified to litmus with conc. hydrochloric acid. Extraction with 1,1,2-trichloro-1,2,2-trifluoroethane and solvent evaporation affords 41 g of (CF3)2CF(CF2)6C2H4SC2H4OH, m.p., 69°-71°.
