Procedure
40 g of 4-oxo-2,5-dimethyl-3-carboethoxytetrahydrofuran in 200 ml of benzyl alcohol are heated at 180°-200° C. The methanol formed is distilled off. The excess benzyl alcohol is distilled off under reduced pressure and the residue is fractionated. 45 g (corresponding to 78% of theory) of 4-oxo-2,5-dimethyl-3-carbobenzyloxytetrahydrofuran of boiling point 102° C/0.02 mm Hg and refractive index nD25 = 1.5070 are obtained.
