Procedure

To 20 ml of acetic acid were added 2.87 g (0.01 mole) of the 4-(3-hydroxy-1-oxo-hexahydro-2-isoindolinyl)phenylacetic acid prepared in step (b) above. The mixture was refluxed, with heating, for 2 hours and the solvent was then evaporated off under reduced pressure, leaving a crystalline residue. These crystals were washed with water, dried and recrystallized from a mixture of ethanol and petroleum ether, giving 2.5 g (89%) of 4-(1-oxo-4,5,6,7-tetrahydro-2-isoindolinyl)phenylacetic acid, melting point 189°-191° C.
