A mixture of 4-chloro-2-phenyl-6-(trifluoromethyl)pyrimidine (50 mg, 0.193 mmol) and 2-chloro-5-methoxyaniline hydrochloride (56 mg, 0.290 mmol) in water:ethanol (1:1, 10 ml) was refluxed for 48 h. The mixture was cooled to room temperature and then basified with aqueous 2N NaOH to pH 10–12. The resulting precipitate was filtered, washed with water, water:ethanol (2:1) and isolated as a brown solid (28 mg, 38%). 1H NMR (CDCl3): 8.50–8.47 (m, 2H), 7.99 (d, J=3.0 Hz, 1H), 7.53–7.47 (m, 3H), 7.36 (d, J=9.0 Hz, 1H), 7.29 (s, 1H), 6.91 (s, 1H), 6.71 (dd, J=3.0, 9.0 Hz, 1H), 3.88 (s, 3H).
