Reaction Steps

To a solution of 3-benzyloxycarbonylamino-1-carboethoxymethylene-1,2,3,4-tetrahydronaphthalene (2.7:1 stereoisomeric mixture, 55 mg) in ethanol (2 mL) stirring at room temperature was added 10% palladium on carbon (6 mg). The reaction mixture was hydrogenated (balloon) for 3 d. At the conclusion of this period, the reaction mixture was filtered through Celite® and evaporated under vacuum to obtain the title compound (30 mg) as a cis-trans mixture which was inseparable by HPLC.
