Alternatively, a 1 M solution of tetrabutylammonium hydroxide in methanol (1 L, 1 mol) and isobutyric acid (88.5 g, 1 mol) was stirred at ambient temperature for 30 min. The solvent was removed in vacuo to afford the title compound (5) as a waxy solid, which was used without further purification.
