A solution of 5-cyano-2-methylthio-4-(3-nitro-phenyl)-6-[(triphenylphosphanylidene)-methyl]-pyrimidine (example 27a, 7.04 g,)) in TBF (64 ml) was treated with aqueous formaldehyde (37 wt. %, 3.55 ml) at 60° C. for 1 h. After the mixture was cooled to room temperature, it was diluted with EtOAb (100 ml) and washed with water (2×50 ml), dried (MgSO4) and concentrated under reduced pressure. The title compound was purified by chromatography on silica gel using hept/EtOAc=9/1 to 3/2 (v/v) as the eluent.
