Procedure

Potassium hydroxide (20.0 g) was added to a solution of ethyl 5-amino-4-(3-aminophenyl)-2-phenyl-thieno[2,3-d]pyrimidine-6-carboxylate (example 31(e), 17.0 g) in a mixture of 1,4-dioxane (210 ml) and water (80 ml). After 16 h at 90° C., the mixture was cooled to 0° C. The resulting precipitate was filtered off, suspended in water (300 ml) and cooled to 0° C. The mixture was acidified to pH 3 by adding 2N aq. citric acid and stirred at 0° C. up to room temperature for 2 h. The resulting precipitate was filtered off, washed with water and dried in vacuo at 40° C.
