Reaction Steps
A solution of 25.57 g (0.09 moles) 2,4-dichloro-6-(2,4,6-trimethylphenoxy)-1,3,5-triazine in 300 ml of dichloromethane was treated with 11.8 g (0.098 moles) p-hydroxystyrene (prepared by hydrolysis of p-acetoxystyiene) dissolved in about 40 ml dichloromethane. The mixture was cooled in an ice-water bath and 36.8 g of 10% aqueous sodium hydroxide solution was added with stirring over about 5 minutes. Stirring was continued for 30 minutes after which time the ice-water bath was removed and stirring was continued for about 2 hours. The mixture was treated with brine, the layers were separated, and after standing, the organic layer was washed twice with brine, and once with water, and dried over magnesium sulfate. Filtration and evaporation gave a white solid with proton NMR spectrum consistent with the desired product, 2-chloro-4-(4-ethenylphenoxy)-6-(2,4,6-trimethylphenoxy)-1,3,5-triazine.
