Reaction Steps

To a solution of the product from Step A (9.5 g, 0.022 mol) in acetone (20 mL) at -10° C. was added freshly prepared Jones reagent (10 mL) and the mixture was stirred at room temperature for 2 hr. The solvent was evaporated and saturated aqueous sodium bicarbonate was added until the pH of the solution was 6. The aqueous mixture was extracted with ethyl acetate (4×50 mL). The combined extracts were washed with brine (2×10 mL), dried (MgSO4) and evaporated to provide a yellow solid (7.5 g, 78%).
