Procedure

A suspension of 0.55 g of benzyl 2(R)-(4-methoxybenzyl)-3-(N-methylpiperazinocarbonyl)propionate hydrochloride (prepared as described in Preparation 23) in 20 ml of ethanol was stirred at room temperature for 4 hours under an atmosphere of hydrogen and in the presence of 0.2 g of 10% w/w palladium-on-charcoal. After removing the catalyst by filtration, the filtrate was concentrated by distillation under reduced pressure. The residue was mixed with ethanol and, after the mixture had been allowed to stand, 0.25 g of the title compound was obtained as a colorless powder, melting at 117°-118° C. (with decomposition)
