Zinc terephthalate was prepared by slow addition of a dilute zinc nitrate solution to sodium terephthalate. The procedure was carried out by reacting 50 mmole of sodium terephthalate in 300 mls of deionized water (Solution A) with an equimolar amount of zinc nitrate in 300 mls of water (Solution B). The reaction was carried out at reflux with an addition time of at least one hour. The reaction mixture was then allowed to reflux for approximately one hour. At the end of this time it was allowed to cool to room temperature, filtered, washed with deionized water and dried in an air oven to produce anhydrous zinc terephthalate.
