A mixture of 4.8 g (0.02 mol) of p-trifluoromethylbenzyl bromide and 3 g (0.019 mol) of 2-(1,3-dioxolan-2-yl)pyridine was allowed to stir at room temperature and then filtered. The solid residue was washed with ether and dried in vacuo to afford 6 g (76.9%) of 1-(p-trifluoromethylbenzyl)-2-(1,3-dioxolane-2-yl)pyridinium bromide (Formula IX: R1 =R7 =H; R2 =4--CF3 ; Z- =Br-).
