Reaction Steps
To a freshly prepared MeONa solution in MeOH (10 mL MeOH and 0.23 g Na metal) are added NMP (10 mL), 4-phenyl-1H-imidazole (1.44 g, 10 mmoles) and 2-chloro-2-methylpropyl)-benzene (1.69 g, 10 mmoles). The reaction mixture is heated at 170° C. (MeOH distilled and evacuated) for 24 hours. NMP is removed under reduced pressure. AcOEt is added and the organic phase is washed with water, dried over magnesium sulphate, filtered and the solvent is removed under reduced pressure. The residue is pre-purified by silica gel chromatography using (CH2Cl2:MeOH) as eluent with a gradient from (100:0) to (98:2) to give 1-(1,1-dimethyl-2-phenylethyl)-4-phenyl-1H-imidazole.
