To a solution of 2-methyl-N-phenyl-N-(o-tolyl)aniline (Compound 10) (8.2 g, 30 mmol) in dichloromethane (DCM) (100 mL), was added n-bromosuccinimide (NBS) (5.34 g, 30 mmol) at about 0° C. and stirred for about 4 hours. The resulting mixture was worked up with dichloromethane/brine, dried over Na2SO4, loaded on silica gel and purified by flash column using eluents of hexanes to hexanes/dichloromethane 9:1. The desired fraction was collected, and removal of solvent gave a white solid (Compound 11) (10.7 g, in 100% yield).
