Reaction Steps

A solution of tert-butyldimethyl(3-(methylthio)propoxy)silane (0.1 mol) in water/MeOH (3:2, 500 mL) at 0° C. was added sodium (meta)periodate (˜30 g). The reaction mixture was stirred first at 0° C. for 20 hours, then at room temperature for 3 hours. The reaction mixture was then filtered and the filtrate was concentrated under reduced pressure to remove the most of the organic solvent. The aqueous residue was then extracted with CHCl3 (2×) and the combined organic extracts were dried with anhydrous sodium sulfate. The organic phase was decanted and concentrated to yield the title compound as an oil which solidified to provide a white solid upon standing (17.65 g).
