Reaction Steps
Into a 50-mL round-bottom flask, was placed a solution of 6-[bis(4-chlorophenyl)methyl]-4-bromo-1,2-dihydroquinolin-2-one (700 mg, 1.52 mmol, 1.00 equip) in N,N-dimethylformamide (15 mL), potassium carbonate (630 mg, 4.56 mmol, 3.00 equip), and CH3I (0.33 g, 1.50 equip). The resulting solution was stirred for 1 h at room temperature. The reaction was then quenched by the addition of water (30 mL). The resulting solution was extracted with ethyl acetate (3×50 mL) and the organic layers combined. The resulting mixture was washed with water (2×50 mL) and saturated brine (1×50 mL). The resulting mixture was concentrated under vacuum. The residue was applied onto a silica gel column with ethyl acetate/petroleum ether (1:10) to yield 6-[bis(4-chlorophenyl)methyl]-4-bromo-1-methyl-1,2-dihydroquinolin-2-one as a yellow solid. (ES, m/z): [M+H]+ 474
