A solution of 2-(4-chlorophenyl)-2-(4-nitrophenyl)acetonitrile (1.000 g, 3.667 mmol, 1 equip) and phosphorus pentasulfide (1.63 g, 7.334 mmol, 2 equip) in EtOH (20 mL) was heated at reflux temperature for 20 h. The reaction mixture was cooled to room temperature and concentrated. The residue was triturated with hot ethyl ether to yield 2-(4-chlorophenyl)-2-(4-nitrophenyl)ethanethioamide as a yellow solid.
