To a flask with DOWTHERM at 245° C. was added 5-(((4-(4-chlorobenzoyl)phenyl)amino)methylene)-2,2-dimethyl-1,3-dioxane-4,6-dione (3.3 g, 8.55 mmol) in portions. The resulting solution was heated for 10 min and cooled down to room temperature. Solids were precipitated from the solution. To the reaction mixture was added hexanes and the solids filtered. The solids were washed thoroughly with Et2O and hexanes and dried under vacuum to yield 6-(4-chlorobenzoyl)quinolin-4(1H)-one. (M+H)+: 284, 286.
