The above 10-acetoxybenzo[b]quinolizinium perchlorate (3.3 g) was dissolved in 500 mL of water, the solution was boiled, and filtered. To the filtrate was added 100 mL of 30% sodium perchlorate solution and the mixture was chilled. The precipitated solid was isolated by filtration and dried in vacuo to afford 1.9 g of 10-acetoxybenzo[b]quinolizinium perchlorate (Formula II: R1 =R2 =H; R7 =10-OAc; X- =ClO4-). The filtrate was extracted with methylene chloride (3×100 mL), the organic layer was dried and concentrated to yield an additional 0.32 g of the desired acetate perchlorate.
